Project Overview

Modern data platforms generate large volumes of operational metrics, yet much of this information exists only in backend system tables that are difficult for administrators and analysts to interpret.

This project focused on designing platform monitoring dashboards for Spotfire Data Virtualization, transforming raw system metrics into clear operational insights.

The dashboards surface key indicators of system health, performance, and usage, enabling teams to understand platform activity, detect issues, and investigate performance patterns without relying on manual system queries.

Design Process

Problem

Administrators relied on backend system tables to investigate platform activity and query performance, which required writing manual queries and interpreting raw system metrics.

Several customers lacked built-in monitoring capabilities and created their own internal dashboards to track platform activity.

The challenge was to design dashboards that translate complex system metrics into clear insights, enabling users to monitor platform activity and investigate performance issues

Outcomes

Three monitoring dashboards were designed to provide visibility into different aspects of platform activity:

  • Dashboard 1 – session-level activity and platform usage

  • Dashboard 2 – system operations and request workload

  • Dashboard 3 – service usage across the platform

Impact

  • Impact: Immediate visibility into platform activity and performance.

  • Result: Administrators can quickly detect spikes and investigate performance issues.

  • Value: Reduces time spent diagnosing platform problems.
